Who are Sharon McKendrick/Susan Evers?
Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers are twin sisters portrayed by Hayley Mills in Disney’s 1961 classic The Parent Trap.
The film, based on the German novel Das doppelte Lottchen by Erich Kästner, tells the story of these identical twins who were separated at birth due to their parents’ divorce. Unaware of each other’s existence, they meet unexpectedly at a summer camp and are astonished by their uncanny resemblance.
Sharon is a refined and proper girl raised by her mother, Maggie McKendrick, in Boston, while Susan is a spirited and outdoorsy girl raised by her father, Mitch Evers, in California. Despite their differing personalities, the sisters quickly bond and devise a clever plan to switch places. Their goal is to experience life with the parent they’ve never known and eventually reunite their estranged parents.
Hayley Mills delivered a groundbreaking dual performance, using split-screen technology to create the illusion of two distinct characters.
