Who is Shenzi?

Shenzi is a cunning and ruthless hyena from Disney’s animated classic The Lion King (1994).

As one of the three main hyenas—alongside Banzai and Ed—she serves as one of Scar’s key allies in his plot to overthrow Mufasa and take over the Pride Lands. Shenzi is portrayed as the leader of the hyena trio, displaying intelligence and a sharp wit that sets her apart from her more bumbling counterparts. She’s also known for her biting sarcasm and sardonic humor, often poking fun at her companions or the situations they find themselves in.

In the original animated film, Shenzi is voiced by the talented Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg’s performance brought a unique charisma to the character, blending humor with a menacing undertone that made Shenzi both entertaining and formidable. The character’s distinct personality and Goldberg’s vibrant delivery helped make Shenzi one of the most memorable secondary villains in the Disney canon.

Shenzi also appeared in the 2019 live-action adaptation of The Lion King, where she was reimagined as a more serious and commanding figure. In this version, Shenzi was voiced by Florence Kasumba, who imbued the character with a more intimidating and authoritative presence, further enhancing her role as a leader among the hyenas.
