What is SMRT-1?

SMRT-1 is a charming robotic character that once delighted visitors at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.

SMRT-1 (Epcot)

Located in the CommuniCore section of Future World, SMRT-1 (pronounced “Smart One”) was a talking robot designed to interact with guests as part of the attraction. This purple, friendly robot, resembling a futuristic tabletop gadget with blinking lights and a glowing, expressive face, was known for its witty personality and engaging conversational skills.

SMRT-1 was part of EPCOT’s original vision to showcase advanced technology and its potential impact on communication. Guests could speak with SMRT-1 through a touch-tone phone and engage in trivia games, showcasing the early integration of speech recognition technology in theme park attractions.

The character’s voice and programming were designed to be both entertaining and educational, embodying EPCOT’s mission to inspire curiosity about the possibilities of technology. The voice of SMRT-1 was performed by Imagineer Dave Feiten, who brought the robot to life with a playful and engaging tone.
