Who is the Mayor of Passamaquoddy?
The Mayor of Passamaquoddy is a character from Disney’s 1977 live-action/animated musical film, Pete’s Dragon.
Passamaquoddy is the small, quaint town where much of the story unfolds, and the mayor serves as a comedic figure in the movie, embodying the traditional small-town authority figure. His role is to maintain order and represent the voice of the townsfolk, though his actions and demeanor often border on humorous and slightly bumbling.
In Pete’s Dragon, the mayor becomes involved when the town is stirred up by the arrival of Pete, an orphaned boy with an invisible dragon named Elliott. His character is often seen during community meetings or addressing concerns stirred by Pete and Elliott’s misadventures. The Mayor’s interactions add to the light-hearted, whimsical tone of the film.
The character was portrayed by Jim Backus, a versatile actor known for his comedic timing and distinct voice. Backus is perhaps best remembered for his roles as Thurston Howell III on the TV sitcom Gilligan’s Island and as the voice of the near-sighted cartoon character Mr. Magoo.
