Who is Thomas?
Thomas is a supporting character in Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas.
A member of the Virginia Company, he is a young English settler who travels to the New World alongside Captain John Smith, Governor Ratcliffe, and the other men aboard their ship. Thomas is depicted as somewhat inexperienced and timid but eager to prove himself as a loyal member of the expedition. He looks up to John Smith as a role model and tries to follow his advice and example.
In the story, Thomas plays a pivotal role in key moments. During a confrontation, he accidentally kills Kocoum, a Native warrior, while attempting to save John Smith. This act escalates tensions between the settlers and Pocahontas’s tribe, becoming a critical turning point in the film. Thomas’s actions reflect his inner conflict between following orders and doing what he believes is right, showcasing his growth throughout the story.
The character of Thomas is voiced by actor Christian Bale. Known for his later roles in films like The Dark Knight trilogy and American Psycho, Bale brought a youthful and earnest energy to Thomas, marking one of his earlier ventures into voice acting.
