Who is Toby the Dog?
Toby the Dog is a minor but memorable character from Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective (1986).
This animated classic, set in Victorian London, follows the adventures of Basil of Baker Street, a mouse detective inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Toby is Basil’s loyal basset hound, who assists him and his companions, Dr. Dawson and Olivia Flaversham, in their mission to thwart the evil Professor Ratigan. Toby’s keen sense of smell and his playful yet protective nature make him a valuable ally in the group’s detective work.
Toby’s character brings warmth and humor to the film. Although he is a large dog compared to the mouse-sized protagonists, he displays a gentle demeanor, especially toward Olivia, the young mouse girl. Toby is instrumental in several scenes, such as when he tracks Ratigan’s henchman, Fidget, or helps the heroes infiltrate dangerous locations.
