Who is Winkie the Barman?
Winkie the Barman is a character from Disney’s 1949 animated film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, which is part of a two-segment feature adapting literary classics.
Winkie is a weaselly bartender who plays a key role in the segment based on The Wind in the Willows. He works at the “Red Lion Inn” and is a conspirator with the gang of weasels that frame J. Thaddeus Toad for theft.
In the story, Toad’s obsession with a motorcar leads him to trade Toad Hall for one, but the deal is a setup orchestrated by Winkie and the weasels to take possession of Toad’s ancestral home. During Toad’s trial, Winkie testifies against him, falsely claiming Toad tried to trade a stolen deed for the car. This testimony leads to Toad’s imprisonment, making Winkie an integral figure in the narrative’s conflict. Despite his treachery, Winkie’s scheming adds to the humorous yet sinister tone of the segment.
In the original animated film, Winkie is voiced by Oliver Wallace, a longtime Disney composer and voice artist.
