Country (1984 Movie)

“Country” is a drama film released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1984. The film was directed by Richard Pearce and stars Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard in the lead roles.

The story is set during the 1970s economic recession in the United States and follows the Brinson family, played by Lange and Shepard, who are struggling to keep their family farm afloat in rural Iowa. The family faces financial difficulties and mounting debts due to falling crop prices and a drought that threatens their livelihood.

Amidst these challenges, the Brinsons must also navigate their own personal issues. The husband and wife have different ideas about how to handle their financial problems, leading to conflicts and tensions in their marriage. Their teenage son, played by Levi L. Knebel, is also struggling with the pressures of growing up in a troubled household.

As the family faces eviction from their farm, they must come together and find a way to overcome their hardships. Jessica Lange’s portrayal of the strong and determined mother, trying to hold her family together during difficult times, earned critical acclaim and earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

“Country” is a heartfelt and emotional film that explores the struggles of rural American families during a period of economic uncertainty. It reflects the challenges faced by many farming communities and the resilience and determination of ordinary people in the face of adversity.

While “Country” was not a box office hit, it received positive reviews from critics for its authentic portrayal of rural life and the performances of its lead actors. The film remains notable as a departure from Disney’s typical family-friendly fare, delving into more mature themes and realistic portrayals of life’s hardships.
