Series Description:

Little Mermaid Island show“Little Mermaid’s Island” was a proposed children’s television series developed in 1990 through a collaboration between Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, and The Walt Disney Company. Envisioned as a spin-off of Disney’s 1989 animated film “The Little Mermaid,” the series aimed to combine live-action puppetry with human characters, creating an engaging experience for young audiences.

The production featured puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, bringing to life characters such as Ariel, Sebastian, and Flounder. Notably, Samuel E. Wright and Buddy Hackett reprised their roles as Sebastian and Scuttle, respectively. The show also introduced new characters, including a sea captain portrayed by Clive Revill and Scales the Dragon, a musical dragon living in a cave, performed by Michael Thompson and voiced by Jim Cummings.

Two pilot episodes, titled “Sebastian’s Birthday” and “Tell the Truth,” were produced, featuring a blend of puppetry and human interaction set against blue-screen backgrounds. Each episode was designed to include multiple musical numbers, with a team of ten songwriters contributing to the project. Despite the innovative concept and the involvement of notable talent, the series was never broadcast. The untimely death of Jim Henson in 1990 and subsequent production challenges led to the project’s cancellation. As a result, “Little Mermaid’s Island” remains a lesser-known chapter in the history of Disney’s adaptations of “The Little Mermaid.”
