Who is Akua?

Akua is a white lioness introduced in Disney’s 2024 film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original “The Lion King.” She is a member of the Outsiders, a pride of lions led by Kiros, and is the sister of Amara and Kiros. The Outsiders are characterized by their distinctive white fur and are known for their antagonistic stance toward Mufasa and his allies. Akua’s name is of West African origin, meaning “born on a Wednesday.”

In the film, the Outsiders seek retribution against Mufasa for the death of Kiros’ son, Shaju. Akua, alongside her pride, relentlessly pursues Mufasa and his brother, Taka (later known as Scar), aiming to avenge Shaju’s death. Their pursuit leads them to the fabled paradise of Milele, culminating in a climactic battle. During this confrontation, Akua and her sister Amara meet their demise while attempting to attack a pride allied with Mufasa.

Joanna Jones provides the voice for Akua in “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Jones is known for her work in musical theater, including her role as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds in the Broadway production of “Hamilton.” Her portrayal of Akua adds depth to the character, capturing the lioness’s determination and loyalty to her pride
