Who is General Li?
General Li is a supporting character in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, recognized as the father of Captain Li Shang.
He is a high-ranking, well-respected leader in the Chinese army, admired for his courage and leadership during a time of great danger. General Li is portrayed as a disciplined and courageous commander, who deeply values honor and duty to his country. He demonstrates these qualities as he and his troops defend against the Huns, leading his army with conviction and dedication. Sadly, General Li meets a tragic fate during a battle against the Huns, where he and his soldiers fall victim to a ruthless attack led by the villainous Shan Yu. His death serves as a turning point in the story, motivating his son, Li Shang, to lead a new group of recruits, including Mulan, into battle.
While Mulan is primarily known for its animated adaptation, General Li does not appear in the live-action 2020 Mulan film, which took creative liberties with the storyline and characters, omitting both General Li and Captain Li Shang in favor of a new set of characters and relationships. In the animated film, General Li is voiced by James Shigeta, a renowned Japanese-American actor known for his roles in both television and film, including Die Hard and Flower Drum Song.
