Who is Governor John Ratcliffe?

Governor John Ratcliffe is the primary antagonist in Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas.

Ratcliffe, portrayed as a pompous and greedy English governor, leads an expedition to the New World in search of gold, believing the native land is filled with vast riches. His character embodies the colonial mindset of entitlement and superiority, often dismissing the Powhatan tribe and their way of life in favor of his ambitious goals.

Ratcliffe’s desire for wealth and status drives much of the conflict in the film, as he is willing to exploit and even resort to violence against the indigenous people to secure the gold he imagines awaits him.
