Who are the Hitchhiking Ghosts?
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are iconic characters from Disney’s The Haunted Mansion attraction, appearing as three spectral travelers encountered near the end of the ride.
Each ghost has its own distinct look and personality, making them an unforgettable part of the eerie yet whimsical journey through the haunted house. The trio consists of Phineas, the tall, thin traveler with a bowler hat and suitcase; Ezra, the skeletal ghost with a broad grin; and Gus, the short, bearded prisoner carrying a ball and chain. They’re known for their mischievousness as they “hitch a ride” with guests in their Doombuggies, thanks to the clever use of special effects that make it appear as though one of the ghosts is joining the riders for the rest of the trip.
Over the years, these characters have appeared in various adaptations, including films and television specials. In the 2003 film The Haunted Mansion, the Hitchhiking Ghosts make a brief, humorous appearance. Their voices were provided by actors such as Corey Burton, but they’re more famously known as animatronics rather than live-action portrayals. In the 2023 Haunted Mansion film, they appear again, delighting fans with their continued spectral charm. Their exact roles vary, but they consistently add a playful, spooky element to the mansion’s lore, embodying Disney’s blend of the creepy and the charming.
