Who is Kala?

Kala is a character from Disney’s animated film “Tarzan,” released in 1999. She plays a central role in the movie as Tarzan’s adoptive mother and is a key figure in the story’s themes of family, acceptance, and the clash of two different worlds.

Kala, voiced by actress Glenn Close, is a gentle and nurturing female gorilla. She is part of a group of gorillas living in the jungle and is the mate of Kerchak, the leader of the gorilla tribe. Kala’s character is characterized by her kindness and compassion.

In the film, Kala discovers the human baby Tarzan after his parents are killed by a leopard. She adopts him as her own and raises him alongside her biological son, Terk, and other members of the gorilla troop. Kala’s love and acceptance of Tarzan highlight the film’s message of family being defined by love and not just blood.

As Tarzan grows, he becomes increasingly aware of the differences between himself and the gorillas, particularly in terms of physical appearance and abilities. Kala supports Tarzan’s quest to discover his true identity and the world of humans.
