Who is Kerchak?

Kerchak is a key character from Disney’s animated film Tarzan (1999). As the stern and powerful leader of a family of gorillas in the jungle, Kerchak plays a complex role as both a father figure and a challenger to Tarzan.

Kerchak is initially suspicious and unwelcoming towards Tarzan, particularly because he’s human, which Kerchak views as a potential threat to his gorilla family’s safety. His mistrust stems from past experiences and a deep sense of responsibility toward his family. Although Kala, Kerchak’s mate, adopts Tarzan and raises him as her own, Kerchak’s reluctance to accept Tarzan as part of the family creates emotional tension throughout the story.
