Who is Madame Leota?

Madame Leota is a beloved and iconic character from Disney’s The Haunted Mansion attraction, found at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and other Disney parks around the world. She is a mysterious and powerful medium whose disembodied head resides within a crystal ball, surrounded by flickering candles and arcane objects.

Positioned in the Séance Room of the attraction, Madame Leota chants eerie incantations that summon the spirits to materialize, playing a pivotal role in setting the ghostly ambiance of the ride.

Madame Leota’s voice was performed by Eleanor Audley, a legendary Disney voice actress also known for portraying Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and Lady Tremaine in Cinderella. Her face, however, belonged to Disney Imagineer Leota Toombs, after whom the character is named. Toombs’ likeness was filmed, and her image was projected onto the crystal ball to create the ethereal effect.

The character has since become an integral part of The Haunted Mansion’s lore, appearing in various adaptations, including films and merchandise. Madame Leota’s enigmatic charm and supernatural aura have solidified her status as one of Disney’s most enduring and recognizable ghostly figures, beloved by fans of the attraction worldwide.
