Who is Masego?
In Disney’s 2024 film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” Masego is introduced as the biological father of Mufasa and the mate of Afia. The name “Masego” translates to “blessings” in Swahili, reflecting his role in Mufasa’s life.
Masego’s character is depicted as a loving and courageous father. Residing in a desolate wasteland, he and Afia raise their son, Mufasa, imparting wisdom and stories of a fabled paradise called “Milele.” A pivotal moment in the film occurs when a sudden rainstorm leads to dangerous floodwaters that sweep Mufasa away. Demonstrating his bravery and paternal devotion, Masego leaps into the flood to rescue his son. Tragically, while he succeeds in saving Mufasa by bringing him to safety, Masego himself is unable to escape the floodwaters and perishes.
The character of Masego is voiced by Keith David, an actor renowned for his deep, resonant voice and extensive work in film and television. David’s previous voice roles include Dr. Facilier in Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” and Goliath in the animated series “Gargoyles.”
