Who is Nani Pelekai?
Nani Pelekai is a key character in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch franchise. She is the older sister and legal guardian of Lilo, stepping into a parental role after the tragic death of their parents in a car accident.
Nani’s character embodies love, resilience, and sacrifice as she struggles to keep her family together under challenging circumstances. Aged around 19, she is depicted as a young woman balancing the responsibilities of adulthood with her sister’s unpredictable behavior and the chaos caused by the alien experiment, Stitch. Despite her struggles, Nani is fiercely protective of Lilo, showing immense patience and a deep bond of sisterly love. She is also portrayed as an avid surfer, a nod to the Hawaiian setting of the story.
Nani’s journey includes battling the risk of losing custody of Lilo, navigating her own insecurities, and developing a budding romance with David Kawena, her loyal friend and admirer. She symbolizes perseverance and the concept of ʻohana (family), a central theme of the series.
Tia Carrere, an accomplished actress and singer, provided the voice for Nani in the original film.
