Who is Russell?

Russell is a beloved character from Disney and Pixar’s animated film Up! (2009).

A cheerful and optimistic young boy, Russell is a Junior Wilderness Explorer with a passion for adventure and a determination to earn his final merit badge for assisting the elderly. He becomes an accidental travel companion to Carl Fredricksen, the grumpy but kind-hearted protagonist who embarks on a journey to fulfill a lifelong dream of visiting Paradise Falls.

Russell’s youthful energy and unrelenting enthusiasm contrast with Carl’s more reserved and cynical demeanor, creating a touching dynamic between the two characters. Throughout their journey, Russell’s innocence, kindness, and curiosity inspire Carl to embrace life again after years of emotional isolation following the loss of his wife, Ellie.

The character of Russell is voiced by Jordan Nagai, who was just eight years old at the time of the film’s production. Nagai’s casting is notable as he was chosen after an extensive audition process involving over 400 children. His natural and authentic performance brought a sense of charm and authenticity to Russell, making him one of Pixar’s most memorable characters.
