Who is Russell “Russ” Thompson, Jr.?
Russell “Russ” Thompson, Jr. is a character from the 1989 Disney film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Portrayed by Thomas Wilson Brown, Russ is the teenage son of the Thompsons, a family living next door to the Szalinskis. Russ is initially portrayed as a somewhat moody and reserved teenager, grappling with typical adolescent issues and a strained relationship with his father, Russell “Big Russ” Thompson, Sr., who often pressures him to embrace traditionally masculine activities like sports, particularly football.
Unlike his father’s expectations, Russ is more introspective and not particularly athletic, which creates tension between them. However, over the course of the film, Russ demonstrates courage, resourcefulness, and leadership when he, along with his younger brother Ron and the Szalinski kids, Amy and Nick, is accidentally shrunk to the size of insects by Wayne Szalinski’s experimental shrinking ray. The group must navigate the perilous backyard, which has turned into a vast jungle-like world full of dangers, including giant insects and other obstacles.
During their journey, Russ begins to bond with Amy Szalinski, and their budding romance adds a heartwarming element to the story. Ultimately, Russ grows closer to his father, who comes to appreciate his son’s individuality and bravery.
