Who is Sarafina?

Sarafina is a minor but memorable character in Disney’s The Lion King (1994). She is the mother of Nala, Simba’s best friend and eventual queen of the Pride Lands.

Though Sarafina has limited screen time and only one line in the film, her presence adds depth to the story by showing the familial ties within the lion pride. She is seen grooming Nala early in the film and later accompanies her daughter when Scar assigns Nala to join Simba in visiting the Elephant Graveyard. Sarafina’s nurturing demeanor and quiet strength suggest her role as a caring and supportive mother.

In the original 1994 animated film, Sarafina is voiced by actress Zoe Leader, whose warm tone helps establish Sarafina’s personality despite her brief appearance. While Sarafina’s role is not central to the narrative, she has become a fan-favorite among viewers who appreciate the subtle way she enriches the story’s familial connections.

Sarafina’s character was also reimagined in the 2019 live-action/CGI adaptation of The Lion King, but she remains largely a background figure in that version as well.
