Who is Tantor?

Tantor is a beloved character from Disney’s animated film Tarzan (1999).

A gentle and somewhat neurotic elephant, Tantor is one of Tarzan’s closest friends, alongside the adventurous gorilla Terk. Despite his large size and strength, Tantor is comically timid and often prone to overthinking, which leads to humorous moments in the film. His cautious nature is balanced by his loyalty and bravery, particularly when it comes to helping Tarzan in critical moments. Tantor’s journey in the story showcases his growth as he overcomes his fears and proves himself a true friend.

In the original Tarzan movie, Tantor is voiced by two actors. Young Tantor, who first appears as a cautious elephant calf worried about swimming in the river, is voiced by actor Taylor Dempsey. As an adult, Tantor is portrayed by the iconic comedian and actor Wayne Knight, known for his role in Seinfeld as Newman.
