Who is Tarzan?

Tarzan, the legendary character from Disney’s animated feature film Tarzan (1999), is based on the iconic literary figure created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his novel Tarzan of the Apes.

Disney’s adaptation portrays Tarzan as a young orphan raised by gorillas after his parents are tragically killed in the jungle. Growing up, he struggles to find his place among the apes but eventually becomes a skilled and powerful “lord of the jungle,” capable of incredible feats of agility and strength. Tarzan’s world is forever changed when he encounters humans for the first time, including the charming and intelligent Jane Porter, with whom he falls in love. This pivotal encounter forces him to grapple with his human identity versus his loyalty to his ape family.

In Disney’s animated version, Tarzan was voiced by Tony Goldwyn, who brought both emotional depth and a sense of vulnerability to the character. His distinctive voice performance captured the essence of a man caught between two worlds. Additionally, the younger Tarzan was voiced by Alex D. Linz during his childhood scenes. Tarzan’s physicality and movements were brought to life through groundbreaking animation techniques inspired by real-life athletes, further enhancing his portrayal as a dynamic and compelling hero.
