Who is The Queen of Hearts?
The Queen of Hearts is a fictional character from Disney’s 1951 animated film Alice in Wonderland, adapted from Lewis Carroll’s classic novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. She is a tempestuous and tyrannical ruler of Wonderland, infamous for her quick temper and her iconic line, “Off with their heads!” The Queen serves as one of the primary antagonists of the film and represents chaos and irrational authority. Her role in the story underscores Alice’s struggle to navigate a nonsensical world filled with unpredictable and often absurd characters.
The Queen is a caricature of unchecked power and emotional volatility. She rules Wonderland with an iron fist, often sentencing her subjects to execution for trivial reasons, though her commands are rarely carried out due to her timid husband, the King of Hearts. She is most famously associated with a game of croquet, played with flamingos and hedgehogs as mallets and balls.
In the original animated film, the Queen of Hearts was voiced by Verna Felton, a renowned voice actress known for her work in other Disney films, including the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and Flora in Sleeping Beauty.
