Who is Tui?
Tui is a prominent character from Disney’s animated film Moana (2016). He is the chief of the fictional Polynesian island of Motunui and serves as the loving but protective father of the film’s heroine, Moana.
As the island’s leader, Tui is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of his people, emphasizing tradition and caution. He is resistant to Moana’s desire to explore beyond the reef, stemming from a tragic past event where he lost a friend to the dangers of the ocean. This protective nature creates the central conflict between Tui and Moana, as she feels called by the ocean to venture beyond their island and restore the heart of Te Fiti.
Tui’s character reflects traditional Polynesian values, such as respect for ancestors and the importance of community. However, his arc also highlights the tension between tradition and innovation, as he ultimately supports Moana’s bravery and leadership.
In the film, Chief Tui is voiced by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison, known for his roles in Star Wars as Jango Fett and Boba Fett.
