Currently no, but in the wake of actress Carrie Fisher’s untimely death last month, a large number of Star Wars fans are petitioning Disney to induct Princess Leia into this exclusive club.

In a Change.org petition, Star Wars fans are asking Disney, who purchased Star Wars franchise owner Lucasfilm in 2012, to crown Princess Leia a Disney Princess.

The petition which, at the time of this writing had over 96,000 supporters, states:

“After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess. This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney’s new properties that is beloved by millions.

What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher. “

The Disney Princess franchise began over a decade ago. There are currently 11 Disney Princess including Show White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida. No doubt, more recent princesses Elsa, Anna and Moana will be considered for the group at some point in the future as well.
