Who is Wong?
Wong is a character in Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) known for his role as a loyal and skilled ally to Doctor Strange. He is portrayed by actor Benedict Wong in the MCU.
In the comics, Wong was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko and first appeared in “Strange Tales” #110 in 1963. He is depicted as a Tibetan monk and the loyal servant and confidant to Doctor Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme.
In the MCU, Wong is introduced in the film “Doctor Strange” (2016). He serves as the librarian and keeper of ancient and mystical texts in Kamar-Taj, the training center for sorcerers. Wong is highly skilled in magic and combat and plays a crucial role in guiding and training Doctor Strange in the ways of the mystic arts.
Wong’s character in the MCU is known for his no-nonsense demeanor, wisdom, and dry sense of humor. Despite being a devoted and formidable sorcerer, he often finds himself on the receiving end of Doctor Strange’s occasional humorous and sarcastic remarks.
Wong’s loyalty to Doctor Strange is unwavering, and he plays a crucial part in helping the Sorcerer Supreme protect Earth from mystical threats, particularly in the battle against Kaecilius and Dormammu in “Doctor Strange” and the conflict with Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
In “Avengers: Infinity War,” Wong is instrumental in defending the New York Sanctum and later joins the battle in Wakanda against Thanos’ forces. However, when the conflict with Thanos becomes dire, Wong makes the difficult decision to protect the Sanctum and the people there, leaving the battle.
Wong’s character is celebrated for his stoic and composed presence, as well as his contributions to the magical side of the MCU. He is a fan-favorite due to his charm and rapport with other characters, including Doctor Strange, Tony Stark (Iron Man), and Bruce Banner (Hulk).
