Disney and OpenAI Forge Landmark $1 Billion AI Partnership

The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI announced a landmark strategic agreement today that will fundamentally expand the use of generative artificial intelligence in entertainment.
Under a three-year licensing and commercial partnership, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and grant the company rights to use more than 200 characters and creative assets from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars in OpenAI’s generative AI products, including the Sora short-form video platform and ChatGPT Images.
The licensing deal will enable users of Sora to generate short, user-prompted social videos incorporating Disney’s characters and environments. A selection of these fan-inspired AI-generated videos is slated for inclusion on Disney+ beginning in early 2026. The agreement also extends to image generation via ChatGPT Images, though it does not include the use of talent likenesses or voices.
In addition to licensing content, Disney will become a major customer of OpenAI, integrating OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) into its products and services – including Disney+ – and deploying ChatGPT across internal teams. As part of the investment, Disney will receive warrants to purchase additional equity in OpenAI, signaling a long-term strategic alignment between the entertainment giant and the AI developer.
