Who is Cobb Vanth?
Cobb Vanth is a character in the Star Wars universe who first appeared in the “Star Wars: Aftermath” trilogy of novels, written by Chuck Wendig. The trilogy is set after the events of “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” and explores the aftermath of the Galactic Empire’s defeat.
Cobb Vanth is introduced as a former slave who becomes the self-appointed lawman of the remote town of Freetown (initially called Mos Pelgo) on the desert planet of Tatooine. He acquires Mandalorian armor from Jawas, which is heavily implied to belong to Boba Fett, the famed bounty hunter seen in the original Star Wars trilogy. Using this armor, Vanth aims to protect his town from various threats, including Tusken Raiders, criminal syndicates, and remnants of the Galactic Empire.
Cobb Vanth’s character made the jump from the novels to live-action in “The Mandalorian,” a Disney+ series set in the Star Wars universe. He is portrayed by actor Timothy Olyphant. In the series, Vanth’s backstory as the marshal of Mos Pelgo is expanded upon, and his encounter with the show’s protagonist, Din Djarin (the Mandalorian), highlights his role as a protector and his possession of the Mandalorian armor. His character exemplifies the themes of redemption, leadership, and the struggle for justice on the fringes of the galaxy.
