Who is Abu?
Abu is a key character in Disney’s animated classic Aladdin. He is Aladdin’s loyal pet and best friend, a small, clever monkey who often helps Aladdin in his adventures.
Known for his mischievous behavior, Abu plays an important role in the story by assisting Aladdin in stealing food to survive and, later, helping him navigate the challenges of finding the magic lamp and dealing with the villain, Jafar. Despite his tendency to be a bit greedy—especially when it comes to treasure—Abu’s loyalty to Aladdin is unwavering.
In the 1992 animated film Aladdin, Abu’s vocalizations were provided by Frank Welker, a legendary voice actor known for his work on many animated characters. Welker brought life to Abu primarily through animal sounds, as the character does not speak human language but communicates through gestures and expressive noises. Welker’s ability to create a wide range of animal voices contributed to Abu’s distinctive personality in the film.
