Who is Caterpillar?

The Caterpillar is a fictional character from the 1865 novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll, and is featured in the animated Disney movie “Alice in Wonderland” (1951).

In the story, the Caterpillar is a hookah-smoking insect that Alice encounters while she is lost in the woods. The Caterpillar is initially aloof and cryptic, but eventually engages in a conversation with Alice, imparting wisdom and asking her difficult questions. The Caterpillar famously asks Alice, “Who are you?” and “What size do you want to be?”

In the Disney movie, the Caterpillar is depicted as a blue, four-inch-long hookah-smoking caterpillar with a distinctive voice. The character is voiced by actor and comedian Richard Haydn. The Caterpillar’s most famous line from the movie is “Who… are… you?” which he utters in a slow and deliberate manner.
