Who is Dante?
Dante is a beloved character from Pixar’s animated film Coco. He is a loyal, somewhat scrappy Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) dog, who becomes the animal companion of the young protagonist, Miguel.
In Mexican culture, Xolo dogs are traditionally thought to be spirit guides, and Dante takes on this role as he accompanies Miguel on his journey through the Land of the Dead. Dante’s quirky, humorous personality and loyalty make him a memorable and charming part of the film.
Throughout Coco, Dante is depicted as a comical yet essential character who aids Miguel in navigating the magical world and ultimately plays a crucial role in helping Miguel connect with his ancestors.
Dante’s transformation into a alebrije (spirit guide) aligns with traditional Mexican folklore, where these creatures are believed to guide spirits on their journeys.
