Who is Figaro the Cat?
Figaro is an adorable and memorable character from Disney’s Pinocchio, a black and white tuxedo cat who belongs to Geppetto, the kind, elderly toymaker who creates Pinocchio.
Figaro is depicted as playful, expressive, and sometimes a bit jealous, particularly of Cleo, Geppetto’s pet goldfish. However, his affection for Geppetto and even Pinocchio shines through, adding warmth to his slightly stubborn personality. Disney animators designed Figaro to embody many cat-like traits, including his curious nature and frequent naps, which add an authentic charm to his character. His playful antics and occasionally grumpy reactions to situations contribute comic relief, making him a fan-favorite among Disney’s classic animated characters.
Figaro’s design and personality were so beloved that he became a popular character outside Pinocchio. Figaro went on to make appearances in several animated shorts alongside Minnie Mouse, becoming her pet and expanding his role in the Disney universe. Notably, Figaro’s movements and expressions were animated by Eric Larson, one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” whose expertise in animating animals helped bring Figaro’s character to life. Figaro remains a cherished symbol of Disney’s Golden Age of animation, embodying the whimsical and heartfelt spirit that defines many of Disney’s classic characters.
