Who is Figment?
Figment is one of EPCOT’s most beloved and iconic characters, representing imagination and creativity. A small, purple dragon with a playful and curious personality, Figment first appeared in 1983 in the Journey Into Imagination attraction at EPCOT’s Imagination Pavilion.
Created as part of the partnership between Disney and Kodak, Figment was the brainchild of Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, who aimed to embody the concept of “figments of imagination.” The character’s whimsical design and mischievous yet endearing behavior quickly made him a fan favorite, especially among children and those fascinated by the theme of boundless creativity.
In the attraction, Figment originally partnered with Dreamfinder, a friendly, eccentric inventor who encouraged him to explore different aspects of imagination. The pair embarked on a journey through art, literature, science, and performing arts, celebrating human creativity. Over the years, Figment’s popularity led to updates to the Journey Into Imagination attraction, though not all changes were well received. The original attraction was reimagined multiple times, ultimately resulting in Journey Into Imagination with Figment, which kept Figment as the primary character without Dreamfinder.
The voice of Figment has changed over time, with the character originally voiced by Billy Barty, a talented voice actor known for his high-pitched, animated vocal style. Later, Dave Goelz, best known for his work with The Muppets, and Muppet performer Corey Burton lent their voices to bring Figment’s lively character to life.
