Who is Geppetto?
Geppetto is a central character in Disney’s animated film Pinocchio, based on the Italian children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.
Geppetto is an elderly, kind-hearted woodcarver who lives alone with his pet cat, Figaro, and his goldfish, Cleo. He is introduced as a skilled craftsman and a gentle soul, longing for companionship and a family of his own. This yearning leads him to carve a wooden puppet named Pinocchio, whom he wishes could become a real boy. His wish is unexpectedly granted when the Blue Fairy brings Pinocchio to life, although he remains a puppet. Geppetto, deeply caring, becomes a devoted father figure, facing various perils and challenges to protect and guide Pinocchio, ultimately demonstrating love and selflessness.
In Disney’s 1940 animated classic, Geppetto was voiced by Christian Rub, a German-born actor who brought a gentle warmth and a slightly whimsical, grandfatherly tone to the character. His voice lent authenticity to Geppetto’s personality, highlighting both his vulnerability and strength as a loving father. In subsequent adaptations, Geppetto has been portrayed by various actors, including Tom Hanks in Disney’s 2022 live-action version, which brings a modern twist to the beloved character while staying true to Geppetto’s compassionate and steadfast nature.
