Who is Hades?

Hades is the primary antagonist in Disney’s animated film Hercules, released in 1997.

In Greek mythology, Hades is known as the god of the Underworld, ruling over the realm of the dead. However, Disney’s version gives Hades a unique twist, portraying him as a fast-talking, sarcastic villain with a fiery temper—both figuratively and literally, as his hair is made of blue flames that blaze red when he gets angry.

Unlike his more stoic mythological counterpart, Disney’s Hades is ambitious and scheming, aiming to overthrow his brother Zeus and take control of Mount Olympus. To achieve his goal, he enlists various creatures, including the Titans and his bumbling henchmen, Pain and Panic. His ultimate plan is to eliminate Hercules, Zeus’s son, who stands in his way.

The character of Hades is brought to life by actor James Woods, whose iconic voice acting helped make Hades a memorable Disney villain. Woods infused the character with quick-witted humor, a touch of sleaze, and a distinctive, often darkly comedic, charisma.
