Who is Hugo?
Hugo is one of the three gargoyles that come to life in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), providing humor and companionship to the story’s protagonist, Quasimodo. He is characterized by his playful and often mischievous nature, standing out as the most comic and carefree of the trio, which includes Victor and Laverne.
The gargoyles act as Quasimodo’s friends and confidants, encouraging him to venture out of the bell tower and experience life beyond Notre Dame’s walls. Hugo, in particular, is known for his humorous one-liners and quirky personality, which contrast the more serious tones of the film. While Quasimodo’s interactions with the gargoyles bring some levity to the story, it’s often implied that the gargoyles may be figments of Quasimodo’s imagination, created to ease his isolation.
The voice of Hugo was provided by comedian and actor Jason Alexander, known for his role as George Costanza on the television show Seinfeld.
