Who is King Stefan?
King Stefan is a key character from Disney’s classic animated film Sleeping Beauty (1959). He is the father of Princess Aurora, the story’s central character, and the husband of Queen Leah.
As the ruler of his kingdom, King Stefan is portrayed as a kind and noble monarch who is deeply devoted to his family and his people. However, his life takes a tragic turn when the malevolent fairy Maleficent curses Aurora as a baby, foretelling her death on her sixteenth birthday after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel. To protect his daughter, King Stefan orders all spinning wheels in the kingdom to be burned and entrusts her upbringing to the care of three good fairies—Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather—who hide Aurora away in the forest.
In the original 1959 animated film, King Stefan does not have a large role and is not depicted with significant character development. Instead, he serves as a figure of authority and love in Aurora’s life. King Stefan was voiced by Taylor Holmes, an American actor with a long career in stage and film. The role of King Stefan in Sleeping Beauty was Holmes’s final film performance, as he passed away shortly after the movie’s release.
