Who is Lady Tremaine?

Lady Tremaine is one of the central antagonists in Disney’s classic animated film Cinderella (1950). She is the wicked stepmother of Cinderella, portrayed as a cold, calculating, and cruel woman who is determined to elevate her own daughters, Anastasia and Drizella, while oppressing Cinderella at every turn.

Lady Tremaine does not possess magical powers but uses manipulation, control, and emotional abuse to dominate Cinderella, making her a servant in her own home. Her iconic scenes include denying Cinderella the chance to attend the royal ball and later locking her in her room to prevent her from trying on the glass slipper. Lady Tremaine’s demeanor is icy and refined, and she rarely raises her voice, using her sharp wit and authority to maintain control.

In the original animated film, Lady Tremaine was voiced by Eleanor Audley, whose chilling performance gave the character her menacing presence. Audley also lent her voice to another iconic Disney villain, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959). The character was later portrayed in Disney’s 2015 live-action adaptation of Cinderella by Cate Blanchett, who brought a more nuanced and layered performance to the role, highlighting Lady Tremaine’s own hardships and motivations. Both performances have cemented Lady Tremaine as one of Disney’s most memorable villains.
