Who is Ling?
Ling is one of the supporting characters in Disney’s animated film Mulan (1998). He is one of Mulan’s three close companions in the Chinese army, along with Yao and Chien-Po. Ling is known for his tall, skinny appearance and comedic personality, often lightening the mood with his humorous remarks. His character serves as comic relief throughout the movie, and he grows to become one of Mulan’s most loyal friends.
Initially, Ling, Yao, and Chien-Po don’t take Mulan (disguised as the male soldier Ping) seriously, but over time, they come to respect and admire her bravery and determination. They play significant roles in helping Mulan defeat the Huns and protect China. Ling’s character symbolizes the strong bonds of friendship and teamwork that form throughout the story.
Ling’s voice is provided by actor and comedian Gedde Watanabe in the original Mulan film. In the live-action remake of Mulan (2020), Ling does not appear as a separate character, though elements of his personality are reflected in other supporting roles.
