Who is Maurice?
Maurice is a significant character in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. He is the eccentric and kind-hearted father of Belle, the story’s protagonist. Maurice is portrayed as an inventor, often seen tinkering with his quirky contraptions, which others in their small provincial town mock.
Despite the ridicule, Maurice is loving and supportive, especially toward Belle, encouraging her dreams and her thirst for adventure. His relationship with Belle showcases a tender and understanding bond, which becomes central to the plot.
Maurice’s role is pivotal to the story. It is his journey to the Beast’s castle, after becoming lost in the woods, that sets the main events in motion. Captured by the Beast, Maurice’s imprisonment prompts Belle to offer herself in his place, beginning her transformative relationship with the Beast.
In the 1991 animated version of Beauty and the Beast, Maurice was voiced by actor Rex Everhart, whose warm and gravelly tones brought the character to life. In the 2017 live-action adaptation, Maurice was portrayed by Kevin Kline.
