Who is Mulan?
Mulan is the titular character from Disney’s animated feature film Mulan (1998) and its live-action adaptation Mulan (2020).
Inspired by the legendary Chinese heroine Hua Mulan, the character is a courageous and resourceful young woman who defies societal expectations to protect her family and country. In the animated film, Mulan disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father’s place in the Chinese army. Despite initial struggles, her intelligence, determination, and bravery help her emerge as a hero, saving China from the invading Huns.
In the animated film, Mulan is voiced by Ming-Na Wen, with her singing voice performed by Lea Salonga. Ming-Na Wen, known for her role in The Joy Luck Club and later in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., brought depth and relatability to the character. Lea Salonga, a Broadway star, delivered Mulan’s iconic songs, including “Reflection,” enhancing the character’s emotional journey.
For the 2020 live-action adaptation, Liu Yifei portrayed Mulan. Liu, a Chinese actress known for her roles in films like The Forbidden Kingdom, delivered a powerful performance, emphasizing the character’s strength and cultural authenticity.
