Who is Roger Radcliffe?
Roger Radcliffe is a central character in Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961). He is a kind-hearted and slightly awkward songwriter who lives in London with his Dalmatian, Pongo. Roger is the quintessential bachelor until Pongo orchestrates a chance meeting with Anita, a fellow dog lover and owner of a female Dalmatian named Perdita. The encounter leads to Roger and Anita falling in love, getting married, and forming a happy household with their dogs. Roger is depicted as a creative and optimistic individual, often seen composing music on his piano. His lighthearted nature contrasts with the film’s antagonist, Cruella de Vil, whose obsession with fashion and Dalmatian fur brings chaos to Roger’s life.
In the animated classic, Roger is voiced by Ben Wright, an English actor known for his roles in other Disney films, such as Mowgli’s wolf father Rama in The Jungle Book (1967). Wright’s distinctive voice adds charm and personality to Roger’s character, making him memorable as a humorous and relatable hero.
Roger Radcliffe also appears in Disney’s live-action adaptations of the story, with Jeff Daniels playing the role in 101 Dalmatians (1996).
