Who is Loki?

Loki is one of the most iconic and complex characters in both Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He is the God of Mischief and is based on the Norse deity of the same name. Created by writer Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artist Jack Kirby, Loki first appeared in “Journey into Mystery” #85 in 1962.

In the comics, Loki is the adoptive brother of Thor, the God of Thunder. He is the son of Laufey, the King of the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, but was adopted by Odin, the ruler of Asgard, after the end of a war between Asgard and Jotunheim. Despite being raised as a member of the royal family of Asgard, Loki always feels like an outsider due to his Frost Giant heritage.

Loki is characterized by his cunning, manipulative nature, and his desire for power and recognition. He is a master of illusion, capable of shapeshifting and deceiving even the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Throughout the comics, Loki’s actions often lead to chaos and conflicts, particularly with his brother Thor and other Avengers.

In the MCU, Loki is portrayed by actor Tom Hiddleston. He first appears in “Thor” (2011) and quickly becomes a fan-favorite character. In the film, Loki’s desire for the throne of Asgard drives him to manipulate events and cause a rift between him and Thor, leading to a chain of events that sets up future films in the MCU.

Loki’s character undergoes significant development in the MCU, from being the primary antagonist in “The Avengers” (2012) to evolving into a more complex and conflicted antihero as the series progresses. His complex relationship with his brother Thor, his adoptive family, and his struggles with identity and self-acceptance make him a multi-layered and compelling character.

Loki’s popularity has led to him receiving his own Disney+ series titled “Loki” (2021). The show explores different timelines and versions of the character, delving deeper into his psyche and motivations.

Throughout both the comics and the MCU, Loki’s character challenges the traditional notions of hero and villain, blurring the lines between good and evil.
