Descendants: The Rise of Red disney+ movieMusician and actress Brandy is set to make a nostalgic return as Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming film, “Descendants: The Rise of Red.” This casting comes nearly three decades after she famously portrayed the first Black Disney Princess in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s adaptation of Cinderella, as reported by ESSENCE.

In “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” the story revisits the magical halls of Auradon Prep, now under the leadership of former Villain Kid (VK) Uma, played by China Anne McClain, who has become the school’s headmaster. The plot thickens when Uma invites a new VK, Red (portrayed by Kylie Cantrall), the defiant daughter of the infamous Queen of Hearts from Wonderland, to Auradon. The Queen of Hearts, played by Rita Ora, harbors a deep-seated vendetta against Cinderella, prompting her to instigate a coup within the kingdom.

The film’s narrative takes a twist when Red collaborates with Cinderella’s detail-oriented daughter Chloe, played by Malia Baker. Together, they embark on a time-traveling adventure to address a past event that propelled Red’s mother toward her malevolent ways. Additionally, viewers will meet Cinderella’s younger self, Ella, depicted by Morgan Dudley, who is characterized as a forthright and pragmatic young woman struggling under her wicked stepmother’s harsh demands.

“Descendants: The Rise of Red,” directed by Jennifer Phang and scripted by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, is set to captivate audiences with its blend of music and dramatic storytelling. The movie will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, July 12th, with a special encore presentation scheduled for Friday, August 9th, at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT on the Disney Channel.
