Who is Fauna?
Fauna is one of the three Good Fairies in Disney’s 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Alongside her companions Flora and Merryweather, Fauna plays a crucial role in the story by protecting Princess Aurora from the malevolent curse cast by the evil fairy Maleficent.
Characterized by her gentle and kind-hearted nature, Fauna is often seen wearing a green dress and a matching pointed hat. She embodies compassion and nurturance, often acting as a soothing presence between the more assertive Flora and the feisty Merryweather.
In the film, the Good Fairies decide to hide Princess Aurora in a secluded woodland cottage to prevent Maleficent’s curse from taking effect. During their 16 years in hiding, Fauna contributes to Aurora’s upbringing, attempting domestic tasks like cooking and sewing—even though she’s not particularly skilled without the aid of magic. Her earnest efforts and occasional clumsiness add a touch of humor and warmth to the story, endearing her to audiences.
Fauna was voiced by Barbara Jo Allen, an American actress and comedian known for her radio persona “Vera Vague.”
