Who is Uma?

Uma is a central character in Disney’s Descendants franchise, which explores the lives of the teenage children of iconic Disney villains and heroes.

Introduced in Descendants 2 (2017), Uma is the daughter of Ursula, the infamous sea witch from The Little Mermaid. Ambitious, cunning, and charismatic, Uma takes on the role of the leader of a pirate gang on the Isle of the Lost, a place where villains and their offspring are exiled. She is often portrayed as a rival to Mal, the daughter of Maleficent, and their feud drives much of the tension in the second film. Uma’s ultimate goal is to escape the Isle of the Lost and claim her rightful place in Auradon, where the heroes reside.

Uma’s character is brought to life by China Anne McClain, a talented actress, singer, and songwriter. McClain infuses Uma with a blend of fierceness and vulnerability, making her a fan-favorite among Descendants viewers. McClain’s musical performances, particularly the song “What’s My Name,” showcase Uma’s defiance and confidence, adding depth to the character. Uma returns in Descendants 3 (2019), where she evolves from a pure antagonist to a more cooperative and complex figure, showcasing her ability to lead and forge alliances.
