Mine‑Train Mayhem: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Back on Track at Disneyland Ahead of Schedule
Published on 11/2/25 by Craig Smith

The wildest ride in the wilderness – the venerable Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland Park – has returned to service earlier than anticipated, marking a pleasant surprise for Frontierland guests. After a two‑month refurbishment that began in early September, the attraction quietly reopened in early November rather than the previously listed date of November 23.
During the closure, Imagineers and maintenance crews replaced the familiar waterfall at the top of the first tunnel climb with high‑efficiency misters that maintain the visual effect while improving reliability and guest comfort.
According to current listings, the ride is accepting Lightning Lane reservations and appears fully operational.
For Disneyland visitors this fall and winter, the early reopening means one fewer headline draw out of rotation — and yet it comes at a time when its counterpart at Magic Kingdom remains closed for a substantial overhaul. The Florida version of Big Thunder is undergoing a deep refurbishment through 2026.
While Disneyland’s version appears to have been refreshed with subtle enhancements rather than a full-scale rebuild, the updated effects and smoother operations should contribute to an improved experience. Guests boarding the runaway mine train this week may notice the mist replacing the cascading waterfall and enjoy the familiar thrills of that iconic first drop. With the holiday season in full swing, the early return of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is sure to be a welcome ride for many.
