Moana is Cleaning House at the Box Office

Disney has been on a record-setting roll this year at the box office and the trend doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Their latest animated feature film Moana opened last week to great reviews and huge box office tallies. While the weekend continues, some Moana box office returns have surfaced and they are pretty impressive. Here is what we know:

Moana began it’s run of success with a a record-breaking $2.6 million take at Tuesday night preview showings (doubling the opening success of last year’s The Good Dinosaur).
This dominance continued into the holiday as Moana broke Frozen’s 2013 record ($15.2 million) earning $15.7 million in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day.
Moana didn’t let up on Black Friday bringing in another $9.9 million, driving up the 2-day total for Thanksgiving weekend to $25 million.
Moana ended the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend earning the second-biggest opening in this time frame in history. It grossed $81.1 million, which put it a bit behind Frozen’s Thanksgiving weekend record of $93.6 million in 2013.

Moana currently is only showing in the US and a few other countries. As we enter December, its international distribution will widen greatly and the box office numbers will really climb. As with all of my Disney box office posts, I will be updating this over the next month or so as new weekly tallies are released, so be sure to check back soon.

Update 1/22/17: Moana’s run in theaters is winding down and it has officially crossed the $500 million mark at the box office. At the end of this weekend, Moana sits at $509.3 million global ($236 million domestic).
