Rogue One Pushes Disney to $7 billion at the Box Office in 2016

Disney announced today that they have crossed the $7 billion mark in total global box office gross. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debuted to a $290 million take, pushing Walt Disney Studios across the historic mark. This is even more amazing considering Disney just announced crossing $6 billion a little more than a month ago. Talk about a strong finish to the year!
The Disney $7 billion this year breaks Universal’s record of $6.89 billion from just last year. Disney has also seen $2.7 billion, which is an industry record as well.
Disney had an amazing run of smash hit movies this year beginning and concluding with a Star Wars movie (much of The Force Awakens’ box office take was in 2016) and mixing in blockbusters Zootopia, Finding Dory, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War and Moana. Of course, not all Disney movies were hits, as some live-action offerings like Alice Through the Looking Glass, Pete’s Dragon and The BFG didn’t quite live up to expectations.
It will be interesting to see how Disney tops this remarkable year in 2017. With a new Star Wars trilogy movie, a Cars sequel, live-action Beauty and the Beast, a new Pirates of the Caribbean, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and new Thor and Spiderman movies, among others, 2017 is well positioned for a nice encore.
Here is a full listing of upcoming Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars movies and their release dates.
